Rear-Admiral Charles Penrose Rushton Coode, C.B., D.S.O., Royal Navy, Retired (24 October, 1870 – 23 December, 1939) was an officer of the Royal Navy.

Early Life & Career

Born in Plymouth, the son of Admiral Trevenen Penrose Coode, Charles Coode passed out of Britannia in July 1885 with the rating of Midshipman. He received his first appointment to the ironclad frigate Agincourt of the Channel Squadron on 20 August, but remained in her only until late November. An appointment to Bellerophon of the North America and West Indies Station came on 16 December. He would stay in her until moving to the Canada on 5 October, 1886. Canada paid off on 11 November, 1889 and Coode went to Excellent for Royal Naval College in early 1890.[1]

On 10 June, 1891, he was confirmed in the rank of Sub-Lieutenant, dated 24 October, 1889.[2]

Coode was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 24 October, 1891.[3]

An early appointment in command of T.B. 89, dated 9 July, 1895, was cancelled. Appointments in Calypso of the Training Squadron (16 September 1895 to 11 February, 1897) and as first lieutenant in Algerine of the China Station followed before Coode received a short appointment in command of the gunboat Redpole on 1 March 1898, returning to Algerine on 24 May.[4]

In August, 1902, Coode grounded Dryad at Berbera and was informed that he had shown a want of care in navigating. To his credit, however, on 7 November 1902, the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs expressed his appreciation for services rendered by Dryad to the Somaliland Protectorate.[5]

On 21 August, 1903 he was invalided with Mediterranean Fever and sent back to Plymouth by P. & O. steamer, arriving on the 27th. He was unfit even for a medical survey and a medical officer had to be sent to him on 1 September. He was not found fit before 20 January, 1904.[6]

Coode was promoted to the rank of Commander on 30 June, 1904.[7][8]

Haughty and Lively collided during peace manoeuvres in late 1904 and Coode was admonished.[9]

On 28 February, 1906, he was diagnosed with defective vision and was invalided back to England, arriving in Tyne in March. On 4 September, after many re-surveys, he was finally found fit. On 2 October, 1906, Coode was appointed in command of the River Class destroyer Gala.[10]

Coode incurred Their Lordships' severe displeasure when Gala collided with Waveney on 28 July, 1907.[11]

Coode was appointed from Gala for command of the scout cruiser Forward on 13 August, 1907 and was praised for her performance in Battle Practice of that year. However, his appointment to the Naval Intelligence Department on 23 January, 1909 was the first of several shore-bound appointments that would fill much of the time remaining before the outbreak of war.[12]

Great War

Promoted to the rank of Captain on 30 June, 1913,[13] Coode was finally appointed from work with the Operations Division for command of the depot ship Blenheim, becoming Captain (D) of the Fifth Destroyer Flotilla on 1 February, 1914.[14][15] Though he would soon be superseded in command of the ship by Acting Captain Percy Pitts, Coode remained in command of 5D.F. through mid-May of 1917 when he was to work with the Admiralty as part of the Operations Division.[16]

Post-War

On the occasion of the King's birthday he was appointed an Additional Member of the Third Class, or Companion, in the Military Division of the Most Honourable Order of the Bath (C.B.) on 3 June, 1919.[17]

Coode received a C.B.(M) and the American Distinguished Service Medal in 1919, and in 1920, the Japanese Order of the Rising Sun.[18]

Coode was appointed as captain of Royal Oak on 12 January, 1921,[19] but this was cancelled.[20]

Coode was placed on the Retired List at his own request on 6 March, 1922 and was promoted to the rank of Rear-Admiral on the Retired List on 11 August, 1923.
