Rear-Admiral Charles John Graves-Sawle, Fourth Baronet, M.V.O., R.N., Retired (28 April, 1851 – 18 February, 1932) was an officer in the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

He was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 28 April, 1876.[1]

He was promoted to the rank of Commander on 31 December, 1890. On 15 September, 1891 he was appointed to Raleigh. On 14 April, 1892 he was made Acting Captain in her, by order of the Commander-in-Chief. Graves-Sawle left the ship when she paid off on 23 February, 1895.[2]

Graves-Sawle was promoted to Captain on 31 December 1896.[3]

He assumed command of the first class protected cruiser Crescent in May 1899.

In May 1900, he was appointed in command of the second class protected cruiser Bonaventure.

He was appointed in command of the armoured cruiser Aboukir on 3 April, 1902.[4]

He was granted 28 days sick leave to Aix les Bains on 15 July, 1904. George Walter Smith relieved him for just two days, and possibly others took up the role until he returned. Graves-Sawle did return, however, and stayed in command of Aboukir until paying her off on 15 June, 1905.[5]

Graves-Sawle was placed on the Retired List due to age on 28 April, 1906 and advanced to the rank of Rear-Admiral on the Retired List on 26 January, 1907.[6]
