Captain (retired) Charles Elsden Gladstone, (24 December, 1855 – ) served in the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

Gladstone entered the Navy on 23 January, 1869 and in 1873 as a Midshipman serving in corvette H.M.S. Druid, Gladstone was landed with the Naval Brigade in the Ashanti War. He passed the Royal Naval College in June, 1876.[1]

Gladstone was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 24 May, 1877.[2]

Gladstone passed as Torpedo Lieutenant First Class on 31 March, 1882. He remained in Vernon as part of the staff, to instruct officers.[3]

On 14 February, 1885, Gladstone was appointed to the Northampton on the North American station for torpedo duties. In this appointment, Gladstone appears to have been tasked with gathering intelligence in a confidential capacity. In April, he was lent to ascertain if Russians had been negotiating to purchase steamers in America. In May, Gladstone delivered an "interesting and able report on Ericsson's Submarine Artillery" and helped with experiments with one such gun. Gladstone also delivered a report on the system of lighting in screw frigate U.S.S. Trenton and used his considerable skills in photography to advance torpedo development.[4]

Gladstone was promoted to the rank of Commander on 31 December, 1890.[5]

Gladstone was appointed in command of the torpedo cruiser Fearless in the Mediterranean on 21 January, 1895. In mid-1896 Gladstone submitted a "clear and interesting report" on the coast of Tunis and of the land of Bizerte. He was found to have committed an error in judgment in firing a salute in a narrow passage, causing Fearless to touch ground on 7 December, 1896.[6]

Gladstone was appointed in command of the Royal Naval Reserve drill ship Eagle on 1 November, 1898. He left her when he was appointed to Severn, additional, as District Officer of Coast Guard, Ramsgate on 7 November, 1901. His appointment was to be three years, and not be renewed.[7]

Gladstone was placed on the Retired List at his own request with the rank of Captain on 7 November, 1904.[8]
