Commander (retired) Charles Edward Aglionby, D.S.O., R.N. (26 June, 1882 – ) served in the Royal Navy and the Royal Canadian Navy.
Life & Career
Born the son of Reverend F. K. Aglionby in Hampton, Poyle[?].
After early service in Mars, Forte, Dido, Bonaventure and Venerable while advancing to the rank of Lieutenant on 26 June, 1903, Aglionby was certified in torpedoes.
In 1906-mid 1907 he served as torpedo officer in Repulse (eight months), Albion (ten weeks) and Magnificent (five months). From 16 July 1907 he spent a year as torpedo officer in Agamemnon.
In 1910 or so, he lost a confidential book and was cautioned to exercise more care in future.
On 21 July, 1910, Aglionby was appointed to Niobe, shortly before she was to be transferred to the Royal Canadian Navy. Though he was retired, he would stay in her through the transition, assuming W/T duties and eventually become her temporary captain upon the departure of Captain William Balfour Macdonald some time between July and October, 1913.
Aglionby was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 26 June, 1911 and placed on the Retired List at his own request on 30 June, 1912.
In September 1915, he was mentioned by Captain Robert G. Corbett for good work performed in Niobe. He left the ship and began service in minesweepers, commanding Gossamer, Zetland, Pansy and Godetia before the war ended.
Aglionby was eventually awarded a D.S.O. for services in Minesweeping from 1 July to 31 December, 1918.
Aglionby reverted to the Retired List on 16 August, 1919 and was promoted to the rank of Commander (retired) in recognition of wartime service, dated 11 November, 1918.
In September 1923, he was reportedly serving under the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries.
He was appointed Admiralty Requisitioning Officer at C[romarty?] on 1 March, 1934.
