Charles Douglas Carpendale

Vice-Admiral SIR Charles Douglas Carpendale, K.C.B., Royal Navy, Retired (18 October, 1874 – 21 March, 1968) was an officer of the Royal Navy.

Early Life & Career

Carpendale was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 14 April, 1894.[1]

Carpendale was promoted to the rank of Commander on 30 June, 1904.[2]

Carpendale was promoted to the rank of Captain on 31 December, 1910.[3]

In February, 1911 Carpendale was appointed as captain of Good Hope.

He was appointed in command of the armoured cruiser Shannon on 5 March, 1912.[4]

In September 1914, he assumed command of the armoured cruiser Donegal. Upon leaving her on 7 August, 1915, he was appointed to Colleen, additional and as Flag Captain, Queenstown, where he would remain until 20 June, 1917.[5]

He was appointed to command the light cruiser Achilles on 20 June, 1917.[6]

He was superseded in Achilles on 11 February, 1918. In March, he was appointed to Vigorous, additional, in charge of Auxiliary Patrol Area XVII as a Commodore, Second Class.

On the occasion of the King's birthday he was appointed an Additional Member of the Third Class, or Companion, in the Military Division of the Most Honourable Order of the Bath (C.B.) on 3 June, 1918.[7]

Post-War

He was appointed Captain of Benbow on 21 February, 1919.[8] He commanded a landing party of marines from Benbow and Marlborough during the Occupation of Constantinople. He turned over command of Benbow on 9 March, 1921.[9]

Carpendale was promoted to the rank of Rear-Admiral on 6 July, 1921.[10]

Carpendale retired on his own request on 1 August, 1923 and was advanced to the rank of Vice-Admiral on the Retired List on 25 October, 1926.[11]

World War II

In 1940, he was called upon to serve as Liaison Officer of Ministry of Information at the Air Ministry with an annual salary of 650 pounds.[12]
