The "CatClass" templates are to be used in the footer of articles in Category:Ship Class. Each requiers a single parameter expressing a two-letter nation code for the ship that built the vessels.
The templates add the article including them into the proper categories for ship classes of this type. For instance, a dreadnought class article with {{CatClassDreadnought|UK}} in the footer is added to the following categories:
- Ship Class
- Capital Ship Class
- Battleship Class
- Dreadnought Class
- Ship Class (UK)
- Capital Ship Class (UK)
- Battleship Class (UK)
- Dreadnought Class (UK)
These various categories allow the sometimes arbitrary distinctions of various eras to be dealt with gently. For instance a CatClassLightCruiser and CatClassThirdClassProtectedCruiser each add their including article to Category:Small Cruiser Class, as the two types of vessel have quite a bit in common despite their dissimilar nomenclature.
