Commander Bernard Buxton, D.S.O., Royal Navy (21 October, 1882 – 29 December, 1923) was an officer of the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

Buxton was born in Thorpe, the son of Geoffrey Howell Buxton who was a banker.[1]

Buxton was promoted to Lieutenant on 31 March, 1904. He married Hermione, the second daughter of the Earl of Verulam on 28 September, 1904. On 20 December, 1910 was appointed to Prince of Wales to be Flag Lieutenant to Rear Admiral John Jellicoe. He would stay in that post for one year.[2]

Buxton was promoted to Lieutenant-Commander on 31 March, 1912.[3]

Buxton was promoted to Commander on 31 December, 1915.[4]

He was mentioned in despatches on 7 May, 1917 for "services in Mesopotamia period December 1916 to March, 1917. For good work done on all occasions. His prompt action under heavy fire on 26 March saved H.M.S. Mantis from running aground in a critical position." He was awarded the D.S.O. for distinguished and gallant services and devotion to duty.[5]

Post-War

On 1 January, 1920, he was granted leave to proceed to Abyssinia. Buxton was invalided home on 9 August, 1922, suffering from old malaria and the stress of service in the tropics. He died at home on 29 December, 1923 at the age of 41.[6]
