Barr and Stroud's Mark III* series of step-by-step fire control instruments were a modest upgrade from the Mark III series. As they and their predecessor and successor series are outlined in the Handbook of Fire Control Instruments, 1914 but not mentioned in the 1909 edition, Mark III* probably was introduced between 1910 and 1913.

Single Order Instruments

The Pattern ???? Single Order Receiver (did this exist?) The Pattern 3133 Single Order Transmitter was like the Mark III type, but had a single cable gland rather than 2. The mechanical tell-tale prevented the transmitter from rolling cyclically past its end.

Rate Instruments

The Pattern 3135 Rate Receiver and Pattern 3134 Rate Transmitter were as the Mark III versions, but all cables entering the housing now used a single gland. It is likely that the cable was 5-core.
