Admiral Arthur John Horsley, Royal Navy, Retired (3 March, 1853 – 7 April, 1937) was an officer of the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

Horsley was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 16 April, 1878.[1]

Horsley was promoted to the rank of Commander on 31 December, 1891.[2]

Horsley was promoted to the rank of Captain on 1 January, 1898.[3]

He was appointed in command of the battleship Magnificent in October 1900.

He assumed command of the first class protected cruiser Hawke in November 1904, remaining with her until the 9 July, 1905.

in 1907, Horsley was again blamed for grounding a ship, the {UK-Achilles|f=t}}. It was declared that he should have issued "special instructions" to avoid this misfortune.[5]

Flag Rank

Horsley was promoted to the rank of Rear-Admiral dated 1 September, 1907, vice Giffard.[6] In accordance with the provisions of the Order in Council of 8 December, 1903, he was placed on the Retired List, at his own request, dated 20 September.[7]

He was advanced to the rank of Vice-Admiral on the Retired List on 31 July, 1912.[8] He was advanced to the rank of Admiral on the Retired List on 9 June, 1916.[9]
