Admiral Arthur Hildebrand Alington, J.P., Royal Navy, Retired (10 October, 1839 – 7 December, 1925) was an officer of the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

Alington was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 26 November, 1859. He was appointed to H.M.S. Megaera on 12 March, 1860 and to Rinaldo on 7 May 1861. Commander Henderson reported Alington's gallantry in saving life from drowning on 12 May, 1861. Alington would next serve in the turret ship Wivern and Britomart, in which the condition of the bilges was draw him censure in late September, 1869.[1]

He was promoted to the rank of Commander on 4 April, 1870.[2]

Alington was promoted to the rank of Captain on 31 October, 1879.[3]

Flag Rank

Alington was promoted to the rank of Rear-Admiral on 28 May, 1894, vice Molyneux.[4] On 1 May, 1895, he hoisted his flag in Empress of India at Devonport as Second-in-Command of the Channel Squadron.[5] On 12 December, 1895, he moved his flag to the newly commissioned Magnificent with Flag Captain Charles J. Barlow.[6][7]

In accordance with the provisions of the Orders in Council of 26 June, 1886 and 22 February, 1870 Alington was placed on the Retired List at his own request on 13 January, 1899.[8] He was advanced to the rank of Vice-Admiral on the Retired List on 1 January, 1901,[9] and was advanced to the rank of Admiral on the Retired List on 16 June, 1904.[10]
