Vice-Admiral (retired) Arthur Calvert Clarke, C.M.G., C.B.E., D.S.O. (10 August, 1848 – 8 November, 1926) was an officer in the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

Clarke was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 23 April, 1872.[1]

Clarke was promoted to the rank of Commander on 31 December, 1883.[2]

Clarke was promoted to the rank of Captain on 30 June, 1891.[3]

At some time around 1898, Clarke "[l]anded with the Naval Force and cooperated with the military at taking over of Sham chur(?). Duty well & exceptionally performed."[4]

Clarke was appointed in command of the battleship Prince George in November, 1901.

Clarke was placed on the Retired List on account of age on 10 August, 1903.[5]

Clarke was promoted to the rank of Rear-Admiral on 10 February, 1904 and then to the rank of Vice-Admiral on 22 March, 1908.[6]

In mid-1915, Clarke offered his services, but was told there was no position for him and that he was free to offer himself to the War Office.[7]

Clarke died at Algiers on 8 November 1926 (first reported as 9 November). His funeral was on the 9th and was attended by members of the British Colony & representatives of French Naval and Military authorities.[8]
