Admiral Arthur Barrow, Royal Navy, Retired (25 March, 1853 – 22 November, 1914) was an officer of the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

Barrow was promoted to the rank of Captain on 31 December, 1889.[1]

He was appointed in command of the frigate Raleigh on the West Coast of Africa on 1 September, 1890. He was superseded on 4 April, 1892 and made the Assistant Director of the Naval Intelligence Department, arriving home on 5 May.[2]

He was appointed in command of the first class protected cruiser Endymion in the Channel Squadron on 25 April, 1895, but was appointed in command of the battleship Royal Sovereign on 21 May, 1895. Paying her off on 11 December, 1895, he took command of Majestic the following day. He would remain in her until 7 June, 1897.[3]

He was appointed Assistant Director of Naval Intelligence on 5 November, 1897.[4]

He was appointed captain of battleship Prince George on 28 June, 1899.[5]

Barrow was appointed commanding officer of H.M.S. Excellent on 20 January, 1901.[6]

Barrow was appointed a member of the Ordnance Committee, dated 1 April, 1903.[7]

Flag Rank

Barrow was promoted to the rank of Rear-Admiral on 6 August, 1903, vice Rose.[8] In accordance with the provisions of the Order in Council of 8 December, 1903, he was placed on the Retired List, at his own request, on 26 May, 1906.[9] He was advanced to the rank of Vice-Admiral on the Retired List on 16 February, 1907,[10] and was advanced to the rank of Admiral on the Retired List on 12 April, 1911.[11]

Barrow died at Coleridge House, Clevedon, Somerset on 22 November, 1914, aged sixty-one.[12]
