Admiral Archibald James Pocklington, Royal Navy, Retired (9 June, 1851 – 16 October, 1922) was an officer of the Royal Navy.

Early Life & Career

Pocklington was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 31 March, 1874.[1]

Pocklington was promoted to the rank of Commander on 21 June, 1887.[2]

Pocklington was promoted to the rank of Captain on 30 June, 1894.[3]

He commanded Andromache during Manœuvres commencing on 8 July, 1896.[4]

Pocklington was appointed in command of the Calypso on 8 May, 1897.[5]

He was placed in command of the first class protected cruiser Europa on 23 November, 1899. He was superseded in her two days after falling from a gangway and breaking his leg. He was treated at Haslar Hospital and then was to be left unemployed for two months. He would be found unfit in a series of surveys before finally being found well on 25 January, 1901. He was appointed as Flag Captain in Sans Pareil on 26 February.[6]

Pocklington was promoted to the rank of Rear-Admiral dated 11 July, 1905, vice Prothero.[7] In accordance with the provisions of the Order in Council of 8 December, 1903, he was placed on the Retired List, at his own request, dated 16 February, 1906.[8]

He was advanced to the rank of Vice-Admiral on the Retired List on 30 April, 1910,[9] and to Admiral on the Retired List on 3 June, 1913.[10]
