Admiral Alfred Taylor Dale, Royal Navy (26 September, 1840 – 14 November, 1925) was an officer of the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

Dale was born on 26 September, 1840, the son of Mr. Clement Dale.[1] Dale went to Harrow school in 1854, but in his first term received a nomination for the Royal Navy, and was entered as a Naval Cadet in H.M.S. Dauntless on 14 September, 1854, under Captain A. P. Ryder. He was present at the bombardment of Sevastopol and received the Crimean Medal and Clasp. He was rated Midshipman on 13 September, 1856.[2][3]

On 14 March, 1857, Dale was appointed to the Calcutta.[4] He served on the staff of the Commander-in-Chief at the capture of Peiho forts in May, 1858, for which he was awarded the China Medal with Taku clasp.

Dale was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 16 April, 1860.[5] He may have won the Beaufort Testimonial award that year.[Citation needed]

He was promoted to the rank of Commander on 4 April, 1870.[6]

Dale was promoted to the rank of Captain on 31 December, 1876.[7]

Dale was appointed to command the Doterel-class sloop Espiegle on 11 October, 1881, remaining in her only until 20 October, 1881.[8]

He was appointed to command the Amethyst-class corvette Diamond on 25 October, 1881, remaining in her until 29 March, 1885.[9]

Dale was appointed to command the corvette Conquest on 18 April, 1885, remaining in her until 27 June, 1885.[10]

He was appointed to command the Devastation on 28 June, 1885, remaining in her until 14 August, 1885.[11]

Dale was appointed to command the Ajax-class battleship Agamemnon on 22 March, 1886, remaining in her until 30 July, 1887.[12]

Flag Rank

Dale was promoted to the rank of Rear-Admiral on 10 September, 1891, vice Barnardiston.[13]

On 10 July 1893 he hoisted his flag in the ironclad Swiftsure for the annual manœuvres, being in command of "D" Fleet as part of the Blue side, representing the French. He struck his flag on 15 August. He was appointed Second-in-Command in the Channel Squadron, and hosted his flag in Empress of India on 25 April, 1894. After the customary one year he struck his flag on 1 May, 1895.[14]

He was promoted to the rank of Vice-Admiral on 16 September, 1897, vice Nicholson.[16] He was promoted to the rank of Admiral, dated 30 May, 1903, vice Bedford.[17]

In accordance with the provisions of the Order in Council of 8 December, 1903, Dale was placed on the Retired List at his own request on 24 May, 1905.[18]
