Vice-Admiral (retired) Alexander Percy Davidson, D.S.O., Royal Navy (30 March, 1868 – 11 February, 1930) was an officer of the Royal Navy.

Early Life & Career

Davidson was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 30 June, 1891.[1]

He was promoted to the rank of Commander on 30 June, 1903.[2]

On the occasion of the coronation of King George V Davidson was promoted to the rank of Captain dated 22 June, 1911.[3]

He served as captain of the battleship Albion from August 1912 until 17 November 1913, when he was appointed in command of the armoured cruiser Aboukir.[4]

He was appointed in command of the battleship Cornwallis on 1 June, 1914.[5]

Great War

He was appointed to command the battleship Duncan on 6 August, 1914.[6]

He was again appointed command of Cornwallis on 21 January, 1915,[7] following a brief tenure under Charles E. Le Mesurier since September.[8]

On 25 April, 1915, he landed to command marines and sailors supporting efforts to capture a battery position, and he oversaw naval aspects of the evacuation of Suvla Bay at the turn of 1916. After Cornwallis was torpedoed, Davidson was appointed in command of Kingsnorth Airship Station for a year, after which, in February 1918 he was given command of Hindustan when she served as a depot ship to support the operations against Zeebrugge.[9]

On 1 June, 1918, Davidson was appointed in charge of the Dockyard and Naval Establishments at Dover.[10]

Post-War

He was appointed in command of Thunderer on 1 June, 1920.[11]

Davidson was promoted to the rank of Rear-Admiral on 27 September, 1921 and was placed on the Retired List at his own request on 28 September. He was advanced to the rank of Vice-Admiral on the Retired List on 25 October, 1926.[12]
