Admiral Albert Baldwin Jenkings, Royal Navy (2 March, 1846 – 5 October, 1942) was an officer of the Royal Navy. he would come to specialise in gunnery and assist the Royal Navy in the technological revolution that would eventually result in a system of director firing.

Life & Career

Jenkings was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant with seniority of 5 September, 1867 and was appointed to H.M.S. Gladiator. He studied gunnery at H.M.S. Excellent from October 1868 to 23 March, 1870, at which time he was sent to H.M.S. Cambridge as a Junior Staff Officer.[1]

Jenkings was promoted to the rank of Commander with seniority of 31 March, 1877.[2]

Jenkings was appointed Commander of the turret ship Inflexible on 4 March, 1881, under Captain John A. Fisher.[3]

He was awarded the Egyptian Medal with Alexandria Clasp in 1882, and on 7 August, 1882, he was specially promoted to the rank of Captain, dated 11 July.[4]

Flag Rank

Jenkings was promoted to the rank of Rear-Admiral on 11 December, 1897, vice Buckle.[5]

He was promoted to the rank of Vice-Admiral dated 21 January, 1903, vice Markham.[6]

Jenkings was promoted to the rank of Admiral on 1 January, 1907.[7] In accordance with the provisions of the Order in Council of 8 December, 1903, he was placed on the Retired List, at his own request, on 1 June.[8]

Jenkings was thanked by Their Lordships for his work as Chairman of a committee to evaluate a remote sighting system of Percy Scott's design fitted to the turret of the old second class battleship H.M.S. Hero.[9]

He would have a long retirement before succumbing to rectal cancer in October, 1942.[10]
