Lieutenant-Commander Alan Charles Henderson Duke, R.N. (8 June, 1886 – 11 July, 1917) was an officer in the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

Born at Royal Military College, Sandhurst, the son of Colonel A. W. Duke.[1]

Duke was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 1 April, 1908. A 1909 evaluation from Merlin's Commander Walter was terribly unfavourable: "very slack & rather ignorant, rather deaf."[2]

Duke served in the battleship Queen early in the war. In early 1916 he was appointed to the light cruiser H.M.S. Dublin as first and gunnery officer.[3]

Duke was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 1 April, 1916.[4]

Duke was appointed to the battleship H.M.S. Vanguard on 1 January, 1917. He somehow survived when she blew up in Scapa Flow on 9 July, 1917, being just one of three men aboard not to be killed outright, but he died two days later of his injuries.[5]
