Service

Vestal was berthed outboard of the battleship Arizona on December 7, 1941, and survived the fatal magazine explosion which destroyed the battleship. Her commanding officer, Commander Cassin Young, was thrown overboard by the force of the explosion, but was able to swim back to the Vestal and resume command, ordering her clear of the inferno on her port side.[7] Commander Young earned the Medal of Honor for his courage and dedication to duty that day.
