U.S.S. Independence was a receiving ship converted from a sailing frigate which was itself a conversion of a sailing ship-of-the-line.

Construction

Service

Receiving ship at Mare Island Navy Yard from 1857 onwards. Sold on 23 November, 1914, her hulk was burnt to recover her salvagable metal fittings on 25 September, 1915.[8][9]
