Service

Fairfax was commissioned on 6 April, 1918 with Lieutenant Commander Stanford C. Hooper in command.

Armament

Fairfax was different than many of her sisters in that in May, 1918, she carried an A.A. gun of some type forward, situated behind the forward 4-in gun. It is not clear whether this is the only such weapon she carried at the time.[7]
