U.S.S. California was one of six Pennsylvania Class armoured cruisers completed for the U.S. Navy.
She commissioned on 1 August, 1907 with Captain V. L. Cottman in command.
Service
She was renamed U.S.S. San Diego on 1 September 1914 to free her name for the new battleship California.
She was lost on 19 July 1918 off Long Island, presumably upon striking a mine laid by the submarine Template:DE-U156. She sank in 28 minutes. Fortunately, only six lives were lost when she capsized. She was the only major U.S. Naval ship to be lost in the Great War.
