Admiral SIR Thomas Hugh Binney, K.C.B., K.C.M.G., D.S.O., Royal Navy (9 December, 1883 – 8 January, 1953) was an officer of the Royal Navy.

His brother was Ralph Douglas Binney.

Life & Career

Binney underwent examinations for several days commencing on 20 July, 1897 and gained entrance to Britannia's term of August, 1897, his 1540 marks placing him third among the sixty-three candidates accepted as naval cadets.[1]

Binney was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 15 September, 1904.[2]

Binney was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 15 September, 1912.[3]

He was appointed as Gunnery Officer in Queen Elizabeth on 24 September, 1914. He would retain this important post until 24 March, 1919.[4]

Binney was promoted to the rank of Commander on 31 December, 1916.[5]

Post-War

Binney was promoted to the rank of Captain on 30 June, 1922.[6]

In December 1922, he was appointed in command of the light cruiser Cardiff.

He was appointed in command of the battlecruiser Hood on 15 August, 1932.[7]

Binney was promoted to the rank of Rear-Admiral on 4 August, 1934.[8]

Binney was promoted to the rank of Vice-Admiral on 22 January, 1938.[9]

World War I

Binney was appointed as Flag Officer Commanding, Orkneys and Shetlands in December, 1939. Binney was promoted to the rank of Admiral on 6 April, 1942 In April, 1943, he was made Chairman of the Manpower Enquiry, being placed on the Retired List to facilitate the promotion of younger officers and re-appointed as Chairman on 9 December.[10]

On 8 February, 1944 he was appointed to Lucifer as Flag Officer in Charge, Cardiff in succession to Admiral Sir Rudolf M. Burmester, to serve in the rank of Rear Admiral. He served there until being superseded on 22 January, 1945.[11]

Binney died after an operation on 8 January, 1953 aged sixty-nine.[12]
