Admiral Thomas Drummond Gilbert (surname Pratt prior to 1920), C.B., Royal Navy, Retired (4 November, 1870 – 24 January, 1962) was an officer of the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

Born in Wellington, the son of William Pratt.[1]

Upon passing out of Britannia in December, 1885, Pratt was appointed to his first ship, the Channel Squadron's H.M.S. Sultan on 11 January, 1886. He remained in her until 1 April, 1889. That summer, he was appointed to Australia for the annual manoeuvres and then to Volage of the Training Squadron on 15 September, 1889.[2]

Sent to China when he was appointed to Peacock in February of 1892, Pratt was appointed in temporary command of the flatiron gunboat Tweed on 25 May, 1892, where he remained until he was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 1 January, 1893.[3][4]

He was promoted to the rank of Commander on 31 December, 1904.[5]

Pratt was promoted to the rank of Captain on 31 December, 1911.[6]

Great War

In October 1913, Pratt took command of Amphion. He was relieved in command by Cecil Henry Fox in April, 1914, and in July was appointed in command of the light cruiser Galatea.

In December 1914, Pratt became Captain of the scout cruiser Active.

In January 1915, he took command of the light cruiser Yarmouth, remaining with her through the Battle of Jutland where she operated as part of the Third Light Cruiser Squadron.[7]

He was appointed in command of the Thunderer on August, 1917.[8]

He was appointed an Additional Member of the Third Class, or Companion, in the Military Division of the Most Honourable Order of the Bath (C.B.) on 1 January, 1918.[9]

Post-War

Pratt applied to have his surname altered to Gilbert on 5 February, 1920. This change became effective on 4 May, 1920.[10]

Gilbert was promoted to the rank of Rear-Admiral on 7 April, 1922, vice Radcliffe.[11] He was appointed in command of the Second Light Cruiser Squadron on 15 May, 1923, hoisting his flag in the light cruiser Curacoa.[12] Gastritis forced him to strike his flag on 9 January, 1925, and he was admitted into Haslar Hospital. He was able to re-hoist his flag on the 12th and was declared fit on 15 January. Upon completion of two years, he was superseded on 15 May, 1925.[13]

Gilbert was placed on the Retired List at his own request on 2 July, 1927 in accordance with the provisions of Order in Council of 7 February, 1927.[14]

He was promoted to the rank of Vice-Admiral on 1 July, 1927, vice Nicholson, and was placed on the Retired List on 2 July.[15] He was advanced to the rank of Admiral on the Retired List on 6 October, 1931.[16]

In 1939, Gilbert was appointed to Oxfordshire on the National Service Committee.[17]
