Stephen Dowell Tillard
Rear-Admiral Stephen Dowell Tillard, R.N. (17 February, 1884 – ) served in the Royal Navy.
Life & Career
Born in Cheltenham.
Tillard was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 17 February, 1904.
Tillard was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 17 February, 1912.
Appointed to Hogue as torpedo officer for the Test Mobilisation, Tillard would survive her sinking on 22 September, 1914. On 10 October, he went to work to help Captain W. S. Nicholson improve the trawlers' use of the modified anti-submarine sweep. On 18 February, 1915, he was moved to Vernon. On 4 March, 1915 he was appointed the torpedo officer in Barham.
Tillard fought in Barham at the Battle of Jutland and was promoted to the rank of Commander on 30 June, 1916. He left the ship when he was sent back to Vernon on 29 October, 1917.
Post-War
Tillard was promoted to the rank of Captain on 30 June, 1922.
Tillard was appointed in command of the battleship Revenge in August, 1932.
Tillard was promoted to the rank of Rear-Admiral on 1 August, 1934.
