Roger Vincent Alison

Captain (retired) Roger Vincent Alison, D.S.O. (22 January, 1885 – ) was an officer in the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

Alison ranked thirty-fifth among 62 successful candidates in examinations for entry to the Britannia intake term of September 1899, with 2265 marks.[1]

On 12 January, 1906, Alison was appointed in command of the first-class torpedo boat T.B. 72.[2]

His early naval career was troubled by hospitalisations in 1905 (Plymouth) and 1907 (Portland).[3]

Alison was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 1 October, 1906.[4]

In 1909, he was described as being "inclined to lose temper at times" but was nonetheless recommended for destroyers by several officers.[5]

Alison was appointed in command of the first-class torpedo boat T.B. 5 on 31 January, 1910.[6] He was credited with her strong showing in Gunnery Practice that year.[7]

Alison was thanked for writing a report on a German torpedo boat and submarine in 1911.[8]

On 1 February, 1912, he was appointed in command of the destroyer Foyle.[9] He was blamed that year for a lack of judgment in a collision between Foyle and the third class protected cruiser Diamond.[10]

Great War

Alison was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 1 October, 1914.[11]

In March or April of 1915, Alison was appointed in command of the new "M" Class destroyer Moresby, which joined the Thirteenth Destroyer Flotilla and was tasked with screen the Grand Fleet.

Alison commanded the destroyer Moresby in the Thirteenth Destroyer Flotilla at the Battle of Jutland[12] and was gazetted for promptness and gallantry in undertaking two torpedo attacks upon the enemy. He w3as accordingly invested with the D.S.O. on 9 December, 1916.[13]

Alison was appointed in command of the destroyer Umpire on 28 July, 1917.[14]

Post-War

Alison was promoted to the rank of Commander on 31 December, 1918.[15]

Alison retired at his own request on 7 January, 1923.[16]

Alison was advanced to the rank of Captain on the Retired List on 22 January, 1930.[17]

World War II

Alison was appointed as Chief of Staff to Flag Officer in Charge, Southampton, vice Cornwallis on 28 November, 1939. Following a brief admission to Haslar Naval Hospital, Alison left his appointment on 27 July, 1940 and reverted to the Retired List the following day.[18]
