Captain SIR Philip Weyland Bowyer-Smyth, Fourteenth Baronet, (4 February, 1894 – 1978) served in the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

An Australian Cadet and the son of C. W. Bowyer-Smyth, Esq. when he entered the Training Establishment in January, 1907.

It was planned to loan him to the Royal Australian Navy for 5[?] years for service in the light cruiser Sydney upon his completing his exams in 1914, but this was cancelled by the outbreak of war. He instead was sent to join the submarine Spiteful. In mid-December 1914, he was appointed to the battleship Superb. He was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 15 August, 1915 and on 6 September 1915 was assigned to the battleship Marlborough. He would see action in her at the Battle of Jutland, and only leave her when he was sent to Portsmouth to qualify in signals in February, 1917.[1]

In late August 1917, he was appointed to the battleship King George V, additional, for duties on the staff of the Vice-Admiral Commanding, Second Battle Squadron.

In February 1919, he finally did go to the R.A.N., being appointed to the heavy cruiser Australia as the Royal Australian Navy's Fleet W/T Officer. He returned to England from this role in September 1921.[2]

Bowyer-Smyth was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 15 August, 1923.[3]

Bowyer-Smyth was promoted to the rank of Commander on 30 June, 1929.[4]

Bowyer-Smyth was promoted to the rank of Captain on 30 June, 1937.[5]

World War II

Bowyer-Smyth was lent to the R.A.N. on 12 April, 1940, but in late 1941 he was brought back to the Admiralty and appointed as D.D.S.D.(M) at Bath, vice Brooking, on 22 December, 1941.[6]

On 30 April, 1942, Bowyer-Smyth was admitted to Royal Naval Hospital Barrow for a compound fracture of his tibia and multiple contusions and a scalp wound. He was discharged on 20 May.[7]

On 29 October 1943, he was appointed as Director of Radio and Radar Equipment.
