Humphry Legge
Commander (retired) Humphry Legge, D.S.O. (14 March, 1888 – 16 October, 1962) served in the Royal Navy.
Life & Career
Legge was born in London, the son of the Seventh Earl of Dartmouth. He would himself fulfill this title as the Eighth Earl of Dartmouth.[1]
Legge was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 31 August, 1909.[2]
At the outbreak of war, Legge was in Leviathan. On 21 October, 1914, he was appointed to Dreadnought as signal officer, after having been considered for the same position in Benbow. He did, however, transfer to Benbow with the transfer of flag. On 23 February 1915 he twas appointed to Princess Royal as flag Lt. to Brock. He remained in the ship through the Battle of Jutland, and on 7 December 1916 he was appointed to Galatea for signal duties.[3]
Legge was placed in Cardiff as flag Lt/ to Alexander-Sinclair in July 1917 and was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 31 August, 1917.[4]
He was placed on the Retired List at his own request upon the completion of special service on 13 July, 1921.[5]
Legge was promoted to the rank of Commander on 14 March, 1928.[6]
