Hugh Philip Middleton

Captain (retired) Hugh Philip Middleton, (16 March, 1889 – ) served in the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

Born in London, the son of Lt. R. W. E. Middleton, R.N..[1]

Middleton was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 15 August, 1910.[2]

Middleton was appointed to light cruiser Galatea as Gunnery Officer on 9 September, 1914. He would fight in her at the Battle of Jutland as flagship of the First Light Cruiser Squadron. His appointment ended on 13 August 1917 and he went to H.M.S. Excellent. Before the war ended, he would also serve as gunnery officer in Superb and Monarch, being promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 15 August, 1918.[3]

After the war, Middleton's career would come to centre on inspection roles within the Royal Navy's Ordnance wing. In 1921-27, he would be Assistant Inspector of Naval Ordnance at Priddy's Hard. In 1927, he was moved to the Naval Ordnance Department at Woolwich and, with other officers, issue a report and investigation on 4-in Mark V guns on 4-in H.A. Mark III and 4-in C.P. II gun mountings.[4]

Middleton was placed on the Retired List at his own request at the rank of Commander on 16 March, 1932.[5]

Middleton was promoted to the rank of Captain on 3 October, 1938.[6]
