H.M.S. Zealandia was one of eight King Edward VII class battleships.  She entered service in 1905 and spent most of her service in the Great War with a shifting roster of her sisters in the Third Battle Squadron.

Service

Her original name, H.M.S. New Zealand, was announced in The Times on 30 September, 1902. She was launched on 4 February, 1904 by Lady Onslow, the wife of the former Governor of New Zealand and Unionist politician the fourth Earl of Onslow. Along with Lord and Lady Onslow, the launch was attended by the Duke of Connaught, Commander-in-Chief Portsmouth, Sir John Fisher.

Owing to the naming of the latest Indefatigable class battle cruiser for her namesake Dominion, New Zealand was renamed H.M.S. Zealandia on 1 December, 1911, by Lady Hall-Jones, the wife of Sir William Hall-Jones, the High Commissioner, in a ceremony at Portsmouth.[8]

After completing to full crew at Portsmouth on 14 May, 1912, Zealandia was assigned to the Third Battle Squadron upon its creation that same month, and remained with the Squadron until January, 1918, when she was detached for miscellaneous duties "in Home Waters or on detached service".[9]

She completed to full crew at Portsmouth 14 May, 1912.[10]

At 08:00 on 6 November, 1915, she left Rosyth for Milford, viâ the Pentland Firth, Minches, and Irish Sea, in company with Albemarle and Hibernia. They were to encounter horrific weather which would leave Albemarle a shambles, obliging Hibernia to escort her into Scapa at 07:30.[11]

Zealandia paid off on 20 September, 1917.[12]

She was paid off from March, 1918 through at least July of 1919.[13]

Radio

By the end of 1913, she and the rest of the Third Battle Squadron were all equipped with Battleship Auxiliary W/T sets.[14]

Captains

Dates of appointment are provided when known.

Alterations

Then part of the Channel Fleet, New Zealand started a refit in Devonport in May 1908, after completing a Gunlayers' Test.[44]

A main battery gunnery director was ordered for Zealandia on 23 July, 1917 for use in bombardment, and though it was available in September 1918, installation was only partially completed before war's end.[45]
