H.M.S. Swinger was one of nine Ariel Class composite gunboats completed for the Royal Navy.
Service
Re-commissioned at Hong Kong on 18 February, 1877.[3]
Swinger arrived at Suez from Aden on 3 April, 1881.[4] She was ordered to return home to be placed out of commission, having served two commissions since February 1877.
Re-commissioned at Devonport on 2 October, 1883 under Lieutenant & Commander John Locke Marx for service on the Australia Station.[5]
Re-commissioned at Sydney on 4 May, 1887.[6]

- Commander Oswald P. Tudor, 22 November, 1876[8] – 31 May, 1881 (followed by a period out of commission)
- Lieutenant & Commander John L. Marx, 2 October, 1883[9][10] – 3 May, 1887[11]
- Commander Albert C. Allen, 1 February, 1887[12] – 17 December, 1891 (intermittently absent with urinary issues)
