H.M.S. Ruby was one of six Emerald Class corvettes completed for the Royal Navy.

Service

Commissioned at Sheerness on 16 April, 1885 under command of Captain Charles F. Hotham.[6]

In February, 1888, she was flagship on the Southeast Coast of America Station, bearing the Senior Officer, Captain William R. Kennedy.[7]

Ruby participated in the Annual Manoeuvres of 1890 under the command of Captain Reginald F. H. Henderson as part of Squadron 4, whose role in the scenario is difficult to discern in a contemporary newspaper account.[8]
