H.M.S. Powerful was the lead ship of a two-ship class of first-class protected cruisers completed in the late 1890s.

Service

Her first assignment was to do duty on the China Station, departing on 7 October, 1897:

"THE BIGGEST CRUISER IN THE WORLD. The cruiser Powerful (Captain Hon. Lambton) yesterday left Portsmouth for the China station on her first commission. She is the largest cruiser in the world on active service. Great importance was attached to her commissioning trials, which finished successfully a day or two ago. Her officers have spent a great deal of money on smartening her up, and she leaves England one of the smartest cruisers that has been put into commission" (Eastern Daily Press).[5]

Powerful arrived at Lagos from Gibraltar on 14 August, 1903.[6]

In 1910, Powerful was the best gunnery ship of the eight tested of the Australia Station, scoring 55.65 versus the average 35.455.[7]

In mid-1913, she was in Devonport, attached to the training ship Impregnable.[8]
