H.M.S. Engadine was a cross-channel steamer converted to a seaplane carrier for the Royal Navy in 1914.
Service
Battle of Jutland
She accompanied the Battle Cruiser Force at the Battle of Jutland. One of her seaplanes under the command of Frederick Joseph Rutland sortied to scout the enemy disposition early in the battle, but actual benefits from this foray were thwarted by the sort of difficulties that typically mooted such early aviation efforts, in this case, engine and wireless problems. After the battle, she undertook a tow of the wallowing armoured cruiser Warrior, but the sieved cruiser foundered before harbour could be made.
Post-Jutland
Having returned from the Black Sea, Engadine was ordered to pay off at Chatham on 13 November 1919 to be returned to civil service.[7]
