Captain (retired) Frederick Colnett Corbyn (15 July, 1883 – 27 December, 1952) served in the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

Born in Punjab, India and raised under the care of his mother Margaret, Corbyn gained two months' time on passing out of Britannia. In mid Spetember 1899 he was appointed to Mars in the Channel Squadron.[1]

Corbyn was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 30 September, 1905.[2]

Corbyn was appointed to Albion on 12 March, 1907. In March 1909, Rear Admiral Limpus recommended him for destroyers, buyt after Albion paid off on 24 May, 1909 Corbyn first went to Pembroke for the Royal Naval Barracks, but on 26 August 1910 he was appointed in command of the "D" Class destroyer Cynthia. This was to be his only destroyer experience before the post-war period, and it lasted under four months. On 15 December, 1910 he was appointed to the battleship Albemarle.[3]

Corbyn was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 30 September, 1913.[4]

Post-War

Corbyn was appointed to Cæsar on 26 February, 1919. On 29 October, he was re-appointed to her as first lieutenant. On 14 June 1922 he was appointed as Divisional Officer in Falmouth Coast Guard., remaining until 20 May, 1923.[5]

Corbyn was placed on the Retired List at his own request with the rank of Commander on 31 July, 1926.[6]

World War II

Corbyn was mobilised on 28 September 1938 and appointed Naval Officer in Charge, Barrow. On 15 September 1939, he was additionally placed in command of Clio.

On 19 July 1940 he was agiven the acting rank of Captain while holding his present appointment. On 22 May 1942 Corbyn was appointed in command of Eland and for administration duties on staff of R.A. W.A.F., vice Nicol in the acting rank of Captain.

On 4 November 1943 he was appointed to Eaglet additional on the staff of F.O.I.C. Liverpool as Deputy District Shipping Controller in the acting rank of Captain.

Admitted to R.M.S.Q. Liverpool with malaria 20 April, 1945. Discharged 20 November, fit for general service.

Corbyn was granted the War Service rank of Captain on 9 February, 1946 and reverted to the Retired List on 1 April, 1946. He travelled to France in 1948 and died in late 1952 of a cerebral hemorrhage.[7]
