Commander Frederick Arthur Pearce Foster, R.N., Retired (24 January, 1889 – 4 July, 1948) was an officer in the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

Born in Hong Kong, the son of F. J. P. Foster, Esq., Frederick entered the Royal Navy ranked 57th in order of merit of sixty cadets accepted in the May 1904 intake term at H.M.S. Britannia.[1]

Foster's seniority as Sub-Lieutenant was altered from 15 July 1909 to 15 January, 1910 by Court Martial held on 22 November 1910 on a charge of wilfull disobedience of a lawful order. This charge was indeed serious, as Foster took Gossamer's whaler under sail into Weymouth at night against orders. The boat capsized and two officers were drowned. Foster foreited six months seniority and was dismissed the ship.

Foster was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 30 June, 1912.

Foster was appointed in command of the destroyer Martin on 21 December, 1917.[2]

Post-War

On 27 April, 1920, Foster was appointed in command of the destroyer Yarra.[3]

Foster was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 30 June, 1920.

His service in the R.A.N. ended on 24 July, 1921 and he returned to R.N. service, being placed in command of Vesper in August.

Foster was placed on the Retired List at his own request with the rank of Commander on 24 January, 1929.
