Captain Donald Roderick Osborn, Jr., (1 June, 1898 – 5 June, 1974) served in the United States Navy.

Life & Career

Osborn was born in Wisconsin but was appointed to the Naval Academy from Missouri. He graduated in 1919 with the accelerated Class of 1920, being commissioned Ensign on 7 June, 1919.[1] He was later promoted to the rank of Lieutenant (Junior Grade) on 7 June, 1922.[2]

Osborn served in submarines throughout the 1920's, being appointed to command submarine R-4 in 1924. He was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 7 June, 1925.[3] In September, 1925 he achieved notoriety when his submarine rescued the crew of a Navy flying boat that had unsuccessfully sought to make the first non-stop flight from California to Hawaii.[4] In 1928 he was appointed to command submarine S-28, remaining in command into 1929.[5] His submarine service concluded with a period of staff duty lasting into 1931.[6]

In the 1930's, Osborn saw further staff duty with the Commander, Cruisers, Scouting Force, and was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant Commander on 1 September, 1934.[7] He was later promoted to the rank of Commander on 1 July, 1939, not long after he assumed command of cargo ship Capella.[8]

During World War II, Osborn commanded ammunition ship Lassen and was the first commanding officer of light cruiser Duluth. He was promoted to the rank of Captain on 18 June, 1942, a temporary promotion that was later made permanent.[9][10]

Osborn retired in July, 1949 and passed away in June, 1974.[11]
