Cunningham was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 1 October, 1935. On 26 February, 1941, he was serving as Lieutenant (G) in the light cruiser Neptune. Presumably, he died when she sank with almost complete loss of life on 19 December, 1941, as he is missing from the Navy List of December, 1943.
