My action station in the MARLBOROUGH was in one of the 13.5 in turrets where I was in charge of the "Handing room", the compartment beneath the gunhouse. I was behind 11 inches of armour so could see nothing of what was happening. From time to time the turret officer would tell us by voice-pipe any information he had on the general situation, but it wasn't much. When we were told that a fleet action was imminent there was much excitement and chatter. The turret trainer, a leading seaman Jimmy Green, remarked

"I hope we don't get into too much of a pot-mess. I've got a dozen eggs on my mess-shelf."
