The 16-in R.L. Torpedo was the first British-made torpedo; 112 were manufactured by the Royal Laboratory between 1872 and 1887, at which time production was switching over to the 14-in Mark I torpedoes.[1]

In 1881, some 7 were repaired at Portsmouth for use in the ironclad battleships Temeraire and Minotaur.[2]

In 1893, all of these weapons were to be broken up except for those in the ironclad frigate Agincourt and six spares.[3]
